A complete step-by-step guide to installing and using vocal presets in Logic Pro X. Learn how to import, organize, and use vocal processing presets to get professional-sounding vocals in minutes.
Getting professional-quality vocals in Logic Pro X doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right vocal presets, you can achieve polished, radio-ready vocals in just a few clicks. In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to install and use vocal presets in Logic Pro X.
What Are Vocal Presets?
Vocal presets are pre-configured effect chains that include EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and other processing specifically designed for vocals. Instead of spending hours tweaking knobs, you can load a preset and instantly get a professional vocal sound.
What You’ll Need
Before we begin, make sure you have:
- Logic Pro X (version 10.4 or later recommended)
- The vocal preset files (
.pstor.cstformat) - Basic familiarity with Logic Pro’s interface
Step 1: Download Your Vocal Presets
First, you’ll need to download the vocal presets you want to install. If you haven’t already, you can get my free Vocal Magic Starter Pack which includes 10 professional vocal presets designed specifically for Logic Pro.
Step 2: Locate Your Logic Pro Presets Folder
Logic Pro stores all channel strip settings in a specific folder on your Mac. Here’s how to find it:
- Open Finder
- Click on Go in the menu bar
- Hold down the Option (⌥) key
- Select Library (this only appears when holding Option)
- Navigate to:
Audio > Presets > Apple > Logic
Your full path should look like this:
/Users/[YourUsername]/Library/Audio/Presets/Apple/Logic Step 3: Create a Channel Strip Settings Folder
Inside the Logic folder, you need to create a folder for your vocal presets:
- Look for a folder called
Channel Strip Settings - If it doesn’t exist, create it
- Inside that folder, create a new folder called
Vocals(or any name you prefer)
Your folder structure should now look like:
Logic
└── Channel Strip Settings
└── Vocals Step 4: Copy Your Preset Files
Now it’s time to install the presets:
- Locate your downloaded vocal preset files
- Unzip the folder if necessary
- Copy all the
.pstor.cstfiles - Paste them into your new
Vocalsfolder
Step 5: Load Presets in Logic Pro
Now you’re ready to use your new vocal presets!
- Open Logic Pro X
- Create or select an Audio Track for vocals
- In the Inspector (left sidebar), click on Channel Strip Settings at the top
- Navigate to the presets menu
- You should see your
Vocalsfolder - Select any preset to load it instantly
Step 6: Adjust the Preset (Optional)
While presets are designed to work right out of the box, you can always tweak them:
- Input Gain: Adjust if the vocal is too quiet or loud
- EQ: Fine-tune for your specific vocal tone
- Reverb/Delay Mix: Adjust wetness to taste
- Compression Threshold: Modify based on your recording level
Pro Tips for Using Vocal Presets
1. Record Clean First
Always record your vocals with minimal processing. The preset should do all the heavy lifting!
2. Watch Your Levels
Make sure your recorded vocals peak around -18dB to -12dB before applying the preset. This ensures the compression and other effects work as intended.
3. Layer Multiple Presets
Try this technique:
- Main vocal with a “clean” preset
- Harmony vocals with a “wide” preset
- Ad-libs with a “bright” preset
4. Save Your Favorites
Once you find a preset you love and make adjustments:
- Click the Channel Strip Settings menu
- Select Save As…
- Give it a custom name
- Now it’s permanently saved!
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Presets Don’t Appear in Logic
Solution: Make sure you placed the files in the correct folder and that they have the .pst or .cst extension. Restart Logic Pro if needed.
Preset Sounds Too Harsh/Muddy
Solution: Every voice is different! Adjust the EQ or try a different preset. The “Warm & Intimate” preset works well for deeper voices, while “Bright & Airy” suits higher vocals.
Too Much Reverb/Delay
Solution: Open the individual effect plugins and reduce the Mix/Wet parameter.
